Lumino City

State Of Play Games

It was fantastic to be involved with the realisation of this unique game. It's creation was a labour of love for the team at State Of Play and lighting the immense yet intricate models was a real privilege. None of us imagined it would lead to a BAFTA for artistic achievement!

Over the course of two years, State Of Play designed and built a vast cardboard city around which the player navigates to solve puzzles and reach the end. Once built by a team of model makers and architects, the model was assembled in a studio and filmed using a C300 on a motion controlled rig. The lighting plan had to work for the whole sequence as the moves were essentially one shot. This was incredibly challenging since the intricacy of the model meant that shadows and details were immediately noticeable on the tight shots yet it also had to look good in a wide shot. Small LEDs were used inside some of the models to illuminate windows or specific features. At a later stage, we filmed the interiors of each model including the library and train station.

The finished video was imported and their work then continued, adding the animated characters, extra shadows and editing all the footage together.

The game has been incredibly well received and we are all incredibly proud of the end result and the BAFTA!
