All Aboard! The Sleigh Ride

The Garden Productions

As a Slow TV Christmas special, The Sleigh Ride offered to take viewers on a two hour journey through frozen Norway. Using a fixed camera on a sledge, initially this sounded incredibly simple but was complicated by many factors including freezing temperatures, lurching sledge motion and limited daylight. In fact, this meant we were only able to complete one journey and record a single take each day!

We were based in Karasjok for a week over which time we perfected our system. We were shooting on a RED Dragon which was attached to a DJI Ronin and Easyrig to absorb vibrations and stay level. We handcrafted a wooden seating arrangement that was fastened to the front sleigh for Justine Evans to operate from. Whilst many of the events and moves were pre-planned the nature of working with Reindeer meant that we had to adapt and respond to things as they happened.

The sub zero temperatures forced us to rely on car batteries for power and provide warmth to other electronics and smaller batteries. Overall the kit held up very well and the end result is a relaxing show worlds apart from the majority of television we have become accustomed to. Thanks to Mark Roberts' sound recording, music and commentary gives way to the natural sounds of wind, slushy snow and reindeer bells.

Many thanks to local guides Thomas and Liv for their support during the shoot and providing the photographs.
